Chapter 1: Diet
I have been making very bad food choices since my diet ended on Friday. After today I plan on implementing a new eating strategy to regain control of the ship.
First let me give you my impressions from the diet.
I am pretty happy that I went through with it. I think this diet will have a couple of long term benefits. I grew to love a few very nutritious vegetables that I had previously only tolerated. Sweet potatoes and kale are going to be on my plate more frequently from here on out. I also have picked up some new snack foods. I am perfectly happy to go with almonds and dried fruit in place of more sugary/bready alternatives. I do want to continue eating more vegetables while cutting back on grains and dairy products. I love my bread and cheese but I need to practice a little more moderation than I have in the past.
I feel like even after my body adjusted to the diet I was still short on energy. Sweet potatoes gave me a little boost but eating grains again I realize just how much more energy they provide (for me anyway). Even though I have been eating crap the last couple days I have felt pretty darn good when I go to the gym or run around. Can’t keep eating like this though or I will have to get used to carrying around some extra weight.
My new plan involves starting with a simple breakfast. Fruit smoothie if I don’t plan on working out before lunch and something like sweet potato and eggs if I am going to. For lunch I will be a little more lenient and allow some grains and cheese. This is where I am going to satisfy my cravings for breads, pastas, rice, and cheeses. Then for dinner I am going to try and eat with the restrictions from the diet I just finished up. No grains, added sugar, or dairy. Lots of vegetables and some protein.
Hopefully this keeps my energy up while still limiting excessive consumption and keeping me from neglecting my veggies.
The plan is to try that out for a couple weeks and tweak it again if needed. I am also allowing myself one dessert per week. With all this heat I can’t just turn my back on ice cream.
Chapter 2: Staying Active
It is becoming a lot easier to be active now that all that wretched snow is gone. I know people can be active in the winter but I have reason to believe that I have bear DNA and can not be expected to ignore my natural instincts.
My friend and I have been walking a lot to get a feel for what El Camino de Santiago will be like (Spring 2013) and we walked about 12 miles on Saturday. It was a pretty great adventure that involved a deer sighting, trail blazing, and free bread (Thanks Pigs Fly!). I am psyched for the trip. Unfortunately I am psyched 13 months too early.
Soccer league is starting in a few weeks! Socks on Fire, the greatest division 2 adult soccer team ever assembled, will be taking the field again in April. Awesome. (language is a means of conveying emotions and ideas Dave and that is the word that I feel will most accurately impress upon others what I am feeling regardless of if we are all wrong)
First day of pick up in Portland was yesterday. We met on the crappy upper field at Payson Park to strap on the cleats and enjoy a little friendly competition. We had around 23 people show up. Amazing!
First tennis match yesterday before pick-up. First trail run later today. Tournaments and tryouts starting next month. It is almost overwhelming. Almost.
I had a bunch of coffee so the tone of this post probably reflects that. Don’t expect this kind of exuberance from me too often.
Was just about to push the publish button then realized I had ZERO pictures in this post…
Here is a collection of pictures I have been saving for a post I was going to title “Around Portland” but would probably have never written:
